Kanu @50: Ebonyi Football Fans Celebrate Nigerian Legend’s Golden Jubilee

Football fans in Ebonyi State have celebrated the 50th birthday of Nigerian football icon and former Super Eagles captain, Nwankwo Kanu, describing him as one of the country’s greatest sporting ambassadors.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Kanu, fondly known as “Papilo,” clocked 50 on Saturday after a distinguished career that saw him earn 86 caps for Nigeria and score 13 international goals.

The former Iwuanyanwu Nationale striker, whose former club is now known as Heartland FC of Owerri, also received the national honour of Member of the Order of the Niger (MON) for his contributions to Nigerian football.

Speaking in Abakaliki, Ebonyi Football Association board member, Ikenna Odo, described Kanu as Nigeria’s most decorated footballer, noting that his achievements continue to inspire generations of young players.

Odo highlighted Kanu’s remarkable honours, including two African Footballer of the Year awards, an Olympic Games gold medal, an Africa Cup of Nations silver medal, four AFCON bronze medals, and numerous domestic and European club titles.

He also recalled that Kanu and compatriot Finidi George became the first Nigerians to win the UEFA Champions League after lifting the trophy with Ajax Amsterdam.

Chairman of the Arsenal Football Club Supporters’ Club in Kpiripkpiri, Abakaliki, Ejike Okoro, said Kanu played a major role in attracting many Nigerian supporters to the English club.

According to him, Kanu made 197 appearances for Arsenal, scoring 44 goals before later featuring for Portsmouth and West Bromwich Albion.

Okoro described Kanu’s contribution to Arsenal’s unbeaten 2003/2004 Premier League-winning campaign as one of the defining moments of his club career.

Football enthusiast and banker, Bright Nweke, also praised the former striker for maintaining financial stability after retirement.

He noted that Kanu, alongside former Super Eagles captain Austin Okocha and a few other ex-internationals, demonstrated prudent financial management during their playing careers.

Nweke said Kanu’s successful transition from professional football serves as an important lesson to active players on the need for proper planning beyond their playing days.
