Kano Governor Unveils Sickle Cell Centre, Disease Control Complex

Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has inaugurated a Sickle Cell Centre and a Disease Control Complex at the Muhammadu Buhari Specialist Hospital, describing the projects as a major step towards strengthening healthcare delivery and tackling public health challenges in the state. The facilities are expected to improve the diagnosis, treatment and management of sickle cell disease and infectious diseases. Speaking during the inauguration, Yusuf said the projects reflect his administration's commitment to expanding access to quality healthcare and reducing the burden of preventable diseases. He noted that the new facilities would provide specialised care for patients living with sickle cell disorder while enhancing the state's capacity to respond to disease outbreaks and other public health emergencies.

The governor explained that the Sickle Cell Centre would offer comprehensive services, including diagnosis, treatment, counselling and public awareness programmes aimed at reducing the prevalence and impact of the genetic disorder. He added that the Disease Control Complex would strengthen surveillance, laboratory services and emergency response to infectious diseases across Kano State.

Yusuf reaffirmed his administration's determination to invest in healthcare infrastructure, recruit qualified medical personnel and provide modern equipment to public health institutions. He urged residents to make good use of the new facilities and embrace preventive healthcare practices to improve overall well-being.

Health officials at the event commended the governor for prioritising the health sector, expressing confidence that the facilities would improve patient care, strengthen disease surveillance and enhance the state's preparedness for future public health challenges.
