Japan Rally Twice to Hold Netherlands in Thrilling World Cup Draw
Japan came from behind on two occasions to secure a valuable 2-2 draw against the Netherlands in an entertaining Group F opener at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Japan produced a spirited performance to earn a 2-2 draw against the Netherlands in their opening Group F fixture of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Sunday, fighting back twice to claim a deserved point.
The entertaining encounter at AT&T Stadium came alive after a largely uneventful first half, with all four goals arriving after the break.
The Dutch side took the lead in the 51st minute through captain Virgil van Dijk. The towering defender rose highest inside the penalty area to head home after a well-delivered ball from Ryan Gravenberch following a partially cleared free-kick.
The goal appeared to give the Netherlands control of the contest, but Japan responded positively and gradually grew into the game.
The Blue Samurai eventually found their equaliser through a swift attacking move that exposed gaps in the Dutch defence, bringing the score level and shifting momentum in their favour.
However, the Netherlands restored their advantage midway through the second half, capitalising on a defensive lapse to move back in front and place pressure on the Asian side once again.
Rather than retreat, Japan continued to press forward in search of another breakthrough. Their persistence paid off when they grabbed a second equaliser, ensuring they would leave Arlington with a share of the points.
The draw leaves both teams with one point after the opening round of matches in Group F and keeps qualification hopes firmly in their own hands.
The Netherlands, regarded as one of Europe’s strongest contenders, will be disappointed not to have converted their leads into victory, particularly after taking the initiative twice during the match.
Japan, meanwhile, will take significant confidence from their performance, having demonstrated resilience and determination against one of the tournament’s traditional heavyweights.
The result also underlines Japan’s growing reputation on the global stage, with the Asian side continuing to show they can compete with elite football nations at major tournaments.
Both teams will now turn their attention to their next group-stage fixtures, where victories could prove crucial in the battle for a place in the knockout rounds of the expanded 48-team World Cup.
