Insecurity: CAN Observes Black Sunday, Demands Urgent Action to End Killings

Christian Association of Nigeria has observed Sunday, June 14, 2026, as Black Sunday across the country in honour of victims of insecurity and violent attacks.

The association said the solemn observance was dedicated to remembering Nigerians whose lives have been lost or disrupted by terrorism, banditry, kidnappings and other forms of violence affecting communities across the nation.

In a message to Christians and Nigerians, CAN President, Daniel Okoh, said the country was passing through a difficult period marked by widespread insecurity and human suffering.

According to him, countless men, women, children, clergy, farmers, students and entire communities have been affected by violence, leaving families devastated and many citizens living in fear.

“Our nation is bleeding, and the Church cannot remain silent while innocent lives are lost and families live in fear,” Okoh stated.

The CAN president noted that the Black Sunday observance coincided with the Democracy Day period, stressing that democracy can only thrive where citizens are protected and human lives are valued.

“Democracy is founded on the sanctity and dignity of human life, the rule of law, justice and the protection of citizens,” he said.

Okoh called on governments at all levels to take urgent, decisive and sustained measures to address insecurity and protect lives and property across the country.

He described the protection of citizens as a sacred responsibility that must be treated with utmost seriousness by those entrusted with leadership.

The association also commended the House of Representatives for passing the Community and State Policing Bill, describing it as an important step towards strengthening grassroots security and improving local participation in safeguarding communities.

CAN further urged churches, Christian schools, hospitals and other faith-based institutions to improve security awareness, emergency preparedness and collaboration with local security networks.

The association encouraged Nigerians to remain united, support affected families and continue praying for peace and national healing.

Okoh also prayed for wisdom and courage for Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other leaders in confronting the country’s security challenges and restoring safety across Nigeria.
