Immigration Service Dismisses Fears Over Ebola Risk Through Nigeria’s Borders
The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has dismissed concerns over porous borders, saying official entry points are properly secured and monitored as part of efforts to prevent Ebola transmission and strengthen border control through improved surveillance and screening systems.
The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has reassured the public that the country’s land borders are not porous, amid growing concerns over the risk of Ebola entering Nigeria from affected regions in Central Africa.
According to the service, all official border points are properly manned, and modern surveillance systems have been deployed to strengthen monitoring, particularly in areas that are difficult to patrol physically.
An immigration spokesperson explained that travellers entering the country are required to pass through proper screening procedures, including documentation checks and relevant health certifications where necessary.
The agency maintained that claims describing Nigeria’s borders as porous are misleading, stressing that personnel are stationed across official entry points to ensure compliance with immigration and security regulations.
While acknowledging the challenges posed by Nigeria’s extensive land borders with neighbouring countries, the service said ongoing investments in technology and manpower are improving overall border management.
Health authorities and security agencies continue to monitor the regional Ebola situation closely, with efforts focused on preventing cross-border transmission and strengthening early detection measures at entry points.
