IG Did Not Issue 'Shoot-on-Sight' Order in Benue – Police

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has clarified that Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Olatunji Disu did not issue a "shoot-on-sight" order against individuals carrying illegal firearms during his recent visit to Benue State. The clarification followed widespread media reports that interpreted the IGP's remarks at a stakeholders' meeting in Makurdi as a directive to officers to immediately shoot anyone found with illegal weapons.

In a statement titled "Clarification: What the Inspector-General of Police Actually Said in Makurdi," the Force explained that the IGP was referring to Force Order 237, which outlines the legal and operational circumstances under which police officers may use firearms. It stressed that the Inspector-General did not introduce any new directive but merely reiterated existing rules governing the lawful use of force by police personnel.

The Police urged the media and the public to avoid misrepresenting official statements, warning that inaccurate reporting on sensitive security matters could create unnecessary panic and misunderstanding. To further clarify the issue, the Force also released a video containing the full remarks made by the IGP during the Makurdi meeting.

The clarification comes amid heightened security concerns in Benue and other parts of the country, where security agencies have intensified efforts to combat armed criminal groups. The Police maintained that officers are expected to act strictly within the law and in accordance with established rules of engagement when confronting armed suspects.
