ICPC Arraigns El-Rufai's Ex-Aide Over Alleged N8.6bn CCTV Contract Fraud
The ICPC has arraigned a former aide to ex-Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai over alleged misappropriation of N8.6 billion meant for the supply of CCTV cameras in the state.
The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has arraigned a former aide to former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, before a Federal High Court over allegations bordering on the misappropriation of N8.6 billion meant for the supply and installation of CCTV cameras in the state.
The defendant, who served in a key capacity under the former governor, was brought before the court to answer charges related to the alleged diversion of funds earmarked for the security project, which was intended to enhance surveillance and combat crime in Kaduna State.
According to the charges filed by the ICPC, the funds were allegedly mismanaged through procurement processes that did not comply with the provisions of the Public Procurement Act and other relevant laws governing the award of contracts in the public sector.
The anti-corruption agency accused the former aide of conspiring with others to inflate contract values, divert public funds, and undermine the integrity of the procurement process, contrary to the laws of the federation.
During the arraignment, the defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges, prompting the prosecution to apply for a trial date and the remand of the accused pending the determination of the case.
The defence counsel, however, urged the court to grant the defendant bail on liberal terms, citing his cooperation with investigators and his readiness to stand trial.
The court is expected to rule on the bail application and adjourn the matter for the commencement of trial in the coming days, as the prosecution prepares to present its witnesses and evidence against the defendant.
The arraignment is part of the ICPC's wider investigation into the alleged misappropriation of public funds during the administration of former Governor Nasir El-Rufai in Kaduna State, a probe that has reportedly extended to several other officials and contractors connected to the project.
The development comes amid ongoing scrutiny of the financial and procurement records of the former Kaduna State administration, with the ICPC vowing to ensure that all those found culpable are made to account for their actions in line with the law.
The case has continued to attract significant public interest, particularly given the high political profile of the former governor and the substantial public funds involved in the alleged fraud.
The ICPC reaffirmed its commitment to the fight against corruption and the recovery of misappropriated public funds, urging Nigerians to continue to support the agency's efforts to ensure accountability and transparency in the management of public resources.
