Iconic DR Congo Fan ‘Lumumba Vea’ Returns to World Cup After Ebola Quarantine
Renowned DR Congo supporter Michel Kuka Mboladinga, popularly known as “Lumumba Vea,” returned to the 2026 FIFA World Cup after completing a 21-day Ebola-related quarantine that forced him to miss the Leopards’ opening match.
The Democratic Republic of Congo’s most recognisable football supporter, Michel Kuka Mboladinga, made an emotional return to the 2026 FIFA World Cup during the Leopards’ Group K encounter against Colombia after completing an Ebola-related quarantine.
Mboladinga, popularly known as “Lumumba Vea,” is famous for dressing and posing like Patrice Lumumba, the Democratic Republic of Congo’s first prime minister and a revered national figure.
The iconic supporter missed DR Congo’s opening Group K match, a 1-1 draw against Portugal, after being placed under a mandatory 21-day quarantine following reported Ebola outbreaks in parts of his home country.
Having successfully completed the isolation period, Mboladinga was cleared to travel and rejoined the Congolese delegation ahead of their second World Cup fixture at Estadio Akron in Guadalajara.
Known for his distinctive match-day routine, Lumumba Vea is often seen standing motionless throughout games with his right arm raised, a symbolic gesture he says represents peace, unity and national pride.
Before kick-off against Colombia, the celebrated fan attracted attention from supporters and photographers alike as he posed for pictures with both Congolese and Colombian fans around the stadium.
He later took his customary position in the stands, silently backing the Leopards as they continued their World Cup campaign.
Mboladinga first gained widespread international recognition during the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, where his unique appearance and unwavering support for DR Congo made him one of the tournament’s most memorable figures.
Since then, he has become one of African football’s most recognisable supporters, regularly travelling to major international competitions to cheer on the national team.
His return to the World Cup was warmly welcomed by Congolese fans, many of whom regard him as a symbol of dedication and patriotism.
For Mboladinga, the tribute to Patrice Lumumba goes beyond football, serving as a reminder of national unity and hope during challenging times for the country.
His presence in Guadalajara added colour and emotion to the occasion as DR Congo sought to strengthen its position in Group K and continue its quest for a place in the knockout rounds.
