Councillor Christopher Adegoke has made history as the first Black and minority ethnic Chairman of Nottinghamshire County Council since 1889, following a journey from his upbringing in Nigeria to a political career in the UK, where he now champions inclusive governance and public service.
Councillor Christopher Adegoke has made history by becoming the first Black and minority ethnic individual to be elected as the Chairman of the Nottinghamshire County Council in the United Kingdom since its establishment in 1889. Following his historic election, Adegoke shared the journey of his early life in Nigeria, his transition into UK politics, and his vision for public service.
Born in Kaduna, northern Nigeria, Adegoke’s early childhood was defined by mobility due to his father’s career transfers, exposing him to different cultural landscapes across the country early on:
- Northern Upbringing: He began his educational journey at St. Michael's Primary School in Kaduna.
- Lagos and Ilorin Transitions: His family later relocated to Lagos, where he attended St. John's Aroloya for a few years, before moving again to Ilorin, Kwara State, where he continued his schooling.
This diverse upbringing across Nigeria's northern, western, and north-central regions laid a foundational resilience and adaptability that would later serve him well in his international political career.
Adegoke was officially elected to the prestigious chairmanship position, breaking a 137-year demographic barrier at the council. His selection has drawn widespread celebration from international community leaders and diaspora organizations alike:
- Commendation from NiDCOM: Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), hailed Adegoke’s election as a historic milestone. She expressed immense confidence that his tenure would be deeply impactful and serve as an inspiration for Nigerians globally.
- Upcoming Inauguration: Following his election win, Adegoke's civic inauguration ceremony to formally assume office as the Chairman and First Citizen of Nottinghamshire County is scheduled to take place on June 28, 2026.
Reflecting on his journey from Nigeria to the peak of UK local government administration, Adegoke emphasized his deep commitment to public service, community development, and fostering inclusive governance. His historic ascent highlights the growing influence, leadership capacity, and socioeconomic contributions of the Nigerian diaspora within mainstream global political ecosystems.
