Heavy Coffee Consumption During Pregnancy May Slow Baby's Growth — Experts
Health experts have warned that heavy coffee consumption during pregnancy may slow a baby's growth and increase the risk of complications. They advise pregnant women to limit caffeine intake to no more than 200mg a day and seek medical guidance on maintaining a healthy pregnancy.
Medical experts have warned that excessive coffee consumption during pregnancy could slow a baby's growth in the womb and increase the risk of complications, urging expectant mothers to limit their caffeine intake. Obstetricians and gynaecologists say high levels of caffeine can cross the placenta, where the unborn baby is unable to metabolise it efficiently, potentially affecting normal development.
According to the specialists, excessive caffeine intake has been linked to restricted fetal growth, low birth weight and an increased risk of miscarriage in some studies. They advised pregnant women to keep their daily caffeine intake below 200 milligrams, roughly the equivalent of one to two small cups of coffee, while also remembering that caffeine is found in tea, chocolate, energy drinks and some soft drinks.
The experts stressed that while moderate caffeine consumption is generally considered acceptable by many medical guidelines, heavy consumption should be avoided because of the potential risks to both mother and baby. They encouraged pregnant women to discuss their diet with healthcare providers and choose healthier alternatives such as water, milk or naturally caffeine-free beverages.
They also advised women planning to conceive to begin reducing caffeine intake before pregnancy as part of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Regular antenatal care, balanced nutrition and adherence to medical advice, they said, remain essential for supporting healthy fetal development and reducing pregnancy-related risks.
