Gunmen Kill Former Councillor in Fresh Plateau Community Attack
Gunmen have killed former Rim Ward councillor Daniel Danjuma Chong during a late-night attack on Rim community in Riyom LGA of Plateau State. The killing has renewed concerns over persistent insecurity in the state, with residents urging authorities to bring the perpetrators to justice.
Gunmen have killed a former councillor, Daniel Danjuma Chong, popularly known as "Hon. Star," during a late-night attack on Rim community in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State. The assailants reportedly stormed the village at about 10:45 p.m. on Saturday, shooting the former lawmaker before fleeing the scene.
Residents said the attack threw the community into panic, with many fleeing their homes as gunfire echoed through the area. Chong, who represented Rim Ward in the Riyom Legislative Council, was confirmed dead shortly after the incident, while residents expressed concern over the recurring violence in the locality.
Community leaders condemned the killing, describing the late former councillor as a respected figure who contributed significantly to the development of the area. They called on security agencies to intensify efforts to protect lives and property, noting that repeated attacks have continued to threaten peace and stability in Riyom and other parts of Plateau State.
The incident adds to a series of violent attacks recorded in Plateau State in recent months, particularly in Riyom and neighbouring local government areas, where communities have repeatedly come under assault by armed men. Residents urged the government to strengthen security presence and ensure that those responsible for the latest attack are identified and brought to justice.
As of the time of filing this report, security operatives had reportedly launched efforts to track down the attackers, while the killing has sparked renewed calls for decisive action to end the persistent insecurity affecting rural communities across the state.
