Guinness World Records Celebrates Messi for Four World Cup Milestones

Guinness World Records (GWR) has celebrated Argentina captain Lionel Messi after the forward set four FIFA World Cup records during his side’s 2-0 victory over Austria on Monday.

Messi scored both goals in the match, helping Argentina secure an important group-stage win while further strengthening his legacy in international football.

Following the game, GWR highlighted the milestones achieved by the 38-year-old and described the moment as historic, stating: “We are witnessing history.”

According to the organisation, Messi now holds the record for the most FIFA World Cup finals goals by a player, with 18 goals, surpassing Germany legend Miroslav Klose, who previously held the record with 16.

He also moved ahead of Brazilian women’s football icon Marta, becoming the outright highest World Cup goalscorer across both men’s and women’s competitions.

GWR further confirmed that Messi extended his record for the most FIFA World Cup matches played by an individual, reaching 28 appearances in the competition after the Austria clash.

The victory also marked his 18th World Cup match win, another record in the tournament’s history.

In addition, Messi’s total minutes played at the World Cup increased to 2,489, setting yet another benchmark for longevity at the highest level of international football.

In a statement shared after the match, Guinness World Records listed the achievements as: “Most FIFA World Cup finals goals by a football player — 18, Most FIFA World Cup matches played by an individual — 28, Most FIFA World Cup matches won by a player — 18, Most FIFA World Cup minutes played — 2,489.”

Messi’s latest performance came despite missing a penalty earlier in the match, before he responded with a decisive brace that secured victory for Argentina.

The achievements further expand his already extensive collection of Guinness World Records titles, strengthening his status as one of the most decorated footballers in history.

He now holds 45 official GWR titles, making him the footballer with the most record recognitions of all time.

With Argentina progressing strongly in the tournament, Messi will aim to continue his record-breaking run as they push toward another deep World Cup campaign.
