Frederick Agbedi Emerges New House of Reps Minority Leader
Bayelsa lawmaker Frederick Agbedi has been named the new Minority Leader of the House of Representatives following Kingsley Chinda's defection to the APC.
Following the resignation of Kingsley Chinda, the minority caucus of the House of Representatives has unanimously selected a ranking lawmaker from Bayelsa State, Hon. Frederick Agbedi, as the new Minority Leader of the Green Chamber.
The member representing Sagbama/Ekeremor Federal Constituency of Bayelsa State, Hon. Frederick Agbedi, was on Thursday officially announced as the new Minority Leader of the 10th House of Representatives.
His emergence was formally communicated during Thursday's plenary session when the Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas, read a letter of consensus transmitted by the minority caucus.
Agbedi, a highly experienced lawmaker who has been in the House since 2011 under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), steps into the leadership vacuum created by the recent departure of Kingsley Chinda. Chinda, who represents the Obio/Akpor Federal Constituency of Rivers State, resigned from the position following his defection from the PDP to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Reading the nomination letter to the House, Speaker Abbas stated, “The minority members of the 10th Assembly hereby unanimously nominate the following members by consensus to fill the vacant positions of the minority in the parliament. Number one is the Minority Leader, Hon. Frederick Agbedi.”
Alongside Agbedi's appointment, the Speaker announced the filling of other vacant minority principal offices to complete the opposition’s leadership structure. Hon. Mansur Soro of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) from Bauchi State was named the new Minority Whip, while Hon. Abdussamad Dasuki of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) from Sokoto State emerged as the Deputy Minority Leader.
"Honourable colleagues, today the body of principal officers is complete, and I want to seize this opportunity on behalf of the entire House to congratulate the three people and to wish them all the best in their new positions," Abbas added.
The resolution of the minority leadership tussle follows recent amendments to the House Standing Rules, which introduced stricter eligibility requirements for principal officers. The new rules effectively barred first-term lawmakers from holding principal leadership roles.
Consequently, Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere from Imo State, a first-timer who had previously been nominated for the Minority Leader position by a coalition of opposition members, formally withdrew from the race, citing the amended rules.
For the PDP, which remains the largest opposition bloc in the House of Representatives despite recent defections, Agbedi's elevation is viewed as a strategic move to restore stability, maintain cohesion within the minority caucus, and provide a formidable opposition voice in legislative proceedings as the 2027 general elections approach.
