France Urges Calm Ahead of World Cup Quarter Final Against Morocco
France has appealed for calm and responsible celebrations as security is tightened ahead of Thursday’s World Cup quarter final clash against Morocco.
French authorities have appealed to football fans to celebrate responsibly as France prepares to face African champions Morocco in a highly anticipated FIFA World Cup quarter final on Thursday.
The call comes amid heightened security measures following concerns that previous high profile football matches have resulted in public disturbances and clashes in parts of the country.
Morocco, which gained independence from France in 1956, maintains close historical and cultural ties with the former colonial power. France is also home to a large Moroccan community, with hundreds of thousands of Moroccans and French citizens of Moroccan descent residing across the country.
The fixture carries added significance because several members of Morocco’s national team were born in France and currently play for French clubs, highlighting the strong sporting links between both nations.
Morocco captain Achraf Hakimi, who was born in Spain, also plays for French club Paris Saint Germain.
Although celebrations remained largely peaceful when France defeated Morocco in the semi finals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, authorities have announced enhanced security arrangements ahead of Thursday’s encounter.
Security personnel are expected to remain on high alert across France during and after the match, which is scheduled to kick off at 10.00 pm local time.
France’s Sports Minister, Marina Ferrari, urged supporters to ensure the occasion remains peaceful and enjoyable for everyone.
“I appeal to everyone’s sense of responsibility. It has to remain a celebration,” she said.
Interior Minister Laurent Nunez also issued a firm warning, stressing that any acts of violence or disorder would not be tolerated by law enforcement agencies.
The authorities’ concerns follow incidents after Paris Saint Germain’s victory over Arsenal in the UEFA Champions League final in May, when widespread disturbances led to numerous arrests in the French capital.
According to Paris prosecutors, police took 225 adults into custody during the unrest, with about half facing charges ranging from confrontation with security officers to destruction of property.
French officials expressed confidence that fans would celebrate peacefully while respecting public order as the country looks forward to another major World Cup fixture.
