England Defender Quansah Banned for Two World Cup Matches After Red Card

England defender Jarell Quansah has been suspended for two FIFA World Cup matches following his dismissal during the Three Lions’ Round of 16 victory over Mexico.

FIFA’s disciplinary committee confirmed the sanction after Quansah was shown a red card during England’s dramatic 3 2 victory at the Azteca Stadium.

The Bayer Leverkusen defender was initially penalised for a challenge on Mexico defender Jesús Gallardo before the decision was upgraded to a straight red card following a Video Assistant Referee review for serious foul play.

As a result of the suspension, Quansah will miss England’s quarter final clash against Norway and would also be unavailable for a potential semi final should Thomas Tuchel’s side progress in the tournament.

The decision comes despite reports that the Football Association was considering an appeal against the automatic suspension after FIFA recently overturned the red card punishment imposed on United States forward Folarin Balogun earlier in the competition.

However, under FIFA’s disciplinary regulations, players and officials found guilty of serious foul play are subject to a minimum two match suspension.

Quansah’s absence represents another setback for England, particularly in defence, where injuries have already reduced Thomas Tuchel’s options on the right side of the backline.

The Three Lions entered the tournament without Tino Livramento after he sustained an injury, while Reece James was also ruled out after the competition got underway.

Although Quansah is primarily a central defender for Bayer Leverkusen, he had been deployed at right back against Mexico before his dismissal.

England will now be forced to reshuffle their defensive line as they prepare for the crucial quarter final encounter against Norway, with Tuchel expected to explore alternative options to fill the void left by the suspended defender.

The suspension is regarded as a significant blow to England’s hopes of progressing further in the tournament as they continue their quest for World Cup glory.
