Former Ogun LG Chairman Returns to Tailoring After Leaving Office

A former Chairman of Kumbotso Local Government Area in Kano State, Abdullahi Gali Shitu, has returned to his tailoring business months after leaving office, saying politics should never be regarded as a permanent source of livelihood. He explained that his decision was meant to encourage politicians and young Nigerians to develop practical skills that can sustain them beyond public office.

Speaking about his return to the trade, Shitu said tailoring had been his primary source of income for more than a decade and even helped finance his political career. According to him, vocational skills provide long-term financial stability, unlike politics, where public office can be lost at any time. He stressed that politicians should see public service as an opportunity to serve rather than a means of making a living.

The former council chairman currently operates a tailoring shop in Sheka Ward, where he supervises about 20 apprentices. He revealed plans to expand the business into a garment manufacturing company capable of employing at least 50 people, saying he hopes to contribute more meaningfully to economic development through entrepreneurship.

Shitu, who holds Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Political Science, urged young people not to look down on vocational trades or rely solely on politics and white-collar jobs. He argued that acquiring practical skills offers greater security and independence, especially in an uncertain political environment.

Although he has resumed full-time tailoring, the former chairman said he remains interested in politics and intends to continue participating in the country's democratic process. However, he maintained that his tailoring business will always take priority because it has consistently provided for him and his family.
