Following Starmer’s Exit, Peter Obi Demands Tinubu’s Resignation Over Governance Failures
Peter Obi has urged President Bola Tinubu to resign, citing worsening insecurity, economic hardship and governance challenges, while drawing comparisons with leadership accountability practices in the United Kingdom.
Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has called on President Bola Tinubu to resign from office, citing what he described as worsening economic conditions, insecurity and governance failures across the country.
Obi made the call in a statement posted on his X account on Monday, drawing inspiration from political developments in the United Kingdom.
According to him, he had listened to a speech by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announcing plans to step down from office, a move Obi said reflected a culture of accountability in democratic governance.
“This morning, I listened to the British Prime Minister’s speech announcing his planned resignation in July,” Obi stated.
He noted that the decision was reportedly influenced by growing public dissatisfaction over economic stagnation, rising living costs and concerns that campaign promises had not been fulfilled.
Obi said Nigeria’s political leaders should embrace similar standards of accountability when government performance falls below public expectations.
The former Anambra State governor recalled events leading up to the 2015 general elections, noting that then-opposition leaders frequently criticised the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan over insecurity and economic challenges.
He specifically referenced calls made at the time for Jonathan to resign following the abduction of schoolgirls in Chibok, arguing that the same standards should apply today.
Obi further recalled campaign promises made by Tinubu ahead of the 2023 presidential election, including commitments to improve electricity supply, strengthen security, combat corruption and improve the welfare of Nigerians.
According to him, those promises have not translated into tangible improvements for citizens.
“At present, these conditions have worsened. Electricity supply remains unreliable, insecurity has intensified in many areas, including kidnappings, and economic hardship has deepened rather than eased,” Obi said.
He also argued that key sectors such as infrastructure, transportation and anti-corruption efforts had experienced setbacks rather than progress.
Obi maintained that resignation would demonstrate responsibility and help promote a political culture rooted in accountability.
“I join Nigerians of goodwill in calling for the resignation of the President over monumental failure in governance,” he stated.
He added that such a step would send a strong message that public office is a trust that carries consequences when leaders fail to meet their obligations to citizens.
