Firefighters Avert Petrol Tanker Explosion in Kwara
Firefighters prevented a major disaster in Ilorin after safely containing fuel leakage from a 45,000-litre petrol tanker, averting an explosion without casualties, injuries or damage to property.
Firefighters in Kwara State on Saturday prevented what could have been a major explosion after successfully containing fuel leakage from a petrol tanker carrying 45,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) in Ilorin, the state capital.
The incident occurred at about 9:40 a.m. at Madi Junction along the Oko-Olowo Expressway when the tanker developed a mechanical fault while transporting the highly flammable product.
According to a statement issued by the spokesperson of the Kwara State Fire Service, Hassan Adekunle, the situation became critical when the tanker’s storage compartment detached from the truck while the driver attempted to repair the faulty component.
The separation caused petrol to spill onto the road, creating a serious fire hazard capable of triggering a devastating explosion.
Adekunle said firefighters responded promptly after receiving a distress call, immediately securing the area to prevent any possible ignition while ensuring public safety.
He explained that the emergency response team remained on standby throughout the operation as the leaking petroleum product was carefully transferred into another tanker.
“Our firefighters immediately secured the area and remained on standby throughout the operation to ensure strict compliance with all safety measures,” he said.
“The emergency response team provided continuous fire protection while the petroleum was carefully transferred from the affected tanker to another tanker, preventing any possible ignition or escalation of the incident.”
The operation was successfully concluded without any fire outbreak, injuries, fatalities or damage to nearby property.
The Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Alabi Muhammed, commended the firefighters for their professionalism, swift response and effective coordination, noting that their intervention prevented a potentially catastrophic disaster.
He also advised tanker operators to ensure routine maintenance of their vehicles to minimise the risk of mechanical failures capable of causing accidents involving petroleum products.
Alabi further urged motorists and transport operators to promptly alert emergency agencies whenever fuel-related incidents occur, stressing that early response remains crucial to protecting lives and property.
“I commend our firefighters for their professionalism and prompt response, which prevented what could have been a major disaster,” he said.
He added that timely reporting of petroleum emergencies would enable emergency responders to act quickly and reduce the risks associated with fuel transportation.
The Kwara State Fire Service reassured residents of its readiness to respond swiftly to emergencies while urging the public to observe safety precautions around fuel tankers and other hazardous materials.
