FIFA to Sell World Cup Final Pitch Pieces to Fans After Showpiece

FIFA has announced plans to sell pieces of the grass pitch used for the 2026 FIFA World Cup final at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, allowing supporters to own a unique piece of football history. Each section of the match-used playing surface will be preserved in a premium acrylic display case and accompanied by details of the final, including the venue and match result. The initiative is expected to generate significant revenue for world football's governing body.

According to FIFA, standard editions measuring approximately 17.5cm x 17.5cm x 17.5cm will be sold for $450, while a larger Hero Edition will retail for $3,000. Each collectible will contain an authentic fragment of the final's playing surface and be presented in a commemorative display box. Sales will initially be available to customers in the United States and Europe, with FIFA projecting that the programme could generate more than $11 million in revenue.

The grass surface was specially installed at MetLife Stadium to meet FIFA's requirements for natural grass during the tournament. The venue, normally home to the NFL's New York Giants and New York Jets, typically uses artificial turf. During the World Cup, however, several players criticised the temporary grass pitch, describing it as unusually hard despite efforts to improve its condition before the final.

The sale forms part of FIFA's broader effort to create exclusive memorabilia around the expanded 48-team World Cup. While it remains unclear whether match-used pitches from other tournament venues will also be sold, the initiative gives fans an opportunity to own a certified piece of one of football's biggest occasions after the final concludes in New Jersey.
