FIFA Explains VAR Technical Failure During Qatar vs Switzerland World Cup Clash
FIFA has clarified that a temporary technical outage affected the offside animation graphic during Qatar’s World Cup match against Switzerland but did not impact the VAR review process.
FIFA has explained the circumstances surrounding a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technical issue during the 2026 FIFA World Cup match between Qatar and Switzerland, insisting that the malfunction did not affect the accuracy of the final decision.
In a statement released after the match, FIFA confirmed that a temporary technical outage prevented the usual offside animation graphic from being displayed before a penalty was awarded to Switzerland in the 14th minute of the encounter.
“During the Qatar vs Switzerland match in the San Francisco Bay Area, a brief technical outage prevented the onside animation graphic from being generated ahead of the penalty awarded to Switzerland in the 14th minute. The issue was quickly resolved,” FIFA stated.
The governing body stressed that the technical problem was limited to the visual graphic system used to display offside reviews to broadcasters and fans, adding that the VAR process itself continued to function normally throughout the incident.
According to FIFA, the officials responsible for reviewing the on-field decision followed the standard protocol without interruption.
“The workflow of the VAR was not affected by this issue and followed the normal procedure in checking the on-field decision,” the statement added.
FIFA further explained that the offside assessment conducted by the VAR team confirmed that the Swiss attacking player involved in the move was in a legal position before the incident that resulted in the penalty award.
“The lines used by the VAR to check the position of the relevant players did not show the attacking player to be in an offside position in either of the two situations immediately before the penalty decision,” FIFA said.
The clarification follows concerns raised by supporters and football observers who questioned the absence of the customary offside animation during the review process.
FIFA maintained that while the graphic generation system experienced a brief interruption, the integrity of the decision-making process remained intact and the penalty decision was reached in accordance with established VAR procedures.
The world football body also confirmed that the technical issue was quickly rectified and did not affect subsequent matches or VAR operations at the tournament.
