FIFA Confirms Mbappe Leads Messi in World Cup Golden Boot Race

France captain Kylian Mbappe has moved ahead of Argentina’s Lionel Messi in the race for the adidas Golden Boot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, despite both players finishing the quarter-finals with eight goals.

FIFA confirmed that Mbappe leads the standings on the tiebreaker after registering three assists, one more than Messi’s two.

The French forward reclaimed top spot after scoring his eighth goal of the tournament during France’s quarter-final victory over Morocco, further strengthening his chances of finishing as the competition’s leading scorer.

Messi also reached eight goals after helping Argentina progress to the semi-finals, but his lower assist tally leaves him second in the rankings.

Under FIFA’s Golden Boot rules, players are first ranked by goals scored. If two or more players finish level on goals, assists are used as the first tiebreaker, while fewer minutes played serve as the next deciding factor if necessary.

Norway striker Erling Haaland remains third in the standings with seven goals after scoring twice against Brazil in the quarter-finals, although his team’s elimination ended his hopes of adding to his tally.

England duo Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane are next on the list, with both players recording six goals and one assist heading into the semi-finals.

France winger Ousmane Dembele occupies sixth position with five goals and two assists after another impressive display for Les Bleus.

A group of players are tied on four goals, including Senegal’s Ismaila Sarr, Mexico forward Julian Quinones, Brazil winger Vinicius Junior and Spain attacker Mikel Oyarzabal.

With the tournament entering the semi-final stage, the Golden Boot race remains open, as Mbappe, Messi, Bellingham, Kane and Dembele all remain in contention to add to their goal tallies.
