FG Suspends Planned Kara Bridge Rehabilitation Indefinitely

The Federal Ministry of Works has suspended indefinitely the planned rehabilitation of a section of the Kara Bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

The repair work, initially scheduled to commence on July 28, 2026, was expected to last for two weeks as part of efforts to improve the safety and durability of the bridge.

The Acting Federal Controller of Works in Ogun State, Engr. R. Adeleye, announced the suspension on Tuesday, saying the decision followed directives from higher authorities.

According to Adeleye, the ministry was compelled to halt the project due to what he described as “very crucial reasons,” adding that a new commencement date would be communicated to the public in due course.

“I am very sorry to announce at this eleventh hour that we have put on hold the proposed Kara Bridge expansion joints repair scheduled to commence this morning, July 28, 2026, on directives from above due to some very crucial reasons,” he said.

“A rescheduled date shall be announced in due course.”

Before the suspension was announced, the Lagos State Government had already issued a traffic advisory to prepare motorists for the planned rehabilitation.

The Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, had explained that the repair works would temporarily reduce the existing four-lane carriageway to two lanes over a 1.5-kilometre stretch to provide a safe working environment for engineers and construction personnel.

The planned traffic diversion was expected to affect motorists travelling along the busy Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, one of Nigeria’s busiest highways connecting Lagos with several states in the South-West and other parts of the country.

Although the ministry did not disclose the reasons behind the last-minute suspension, the decision means motorists will continue using the bridge without the anticipated traffic restrictions for now.

Authorities have assured road users that the rehabilitation project has not been cancelled and that a fresh date for the commencement of the repairs will be announced after the outstanding issues have been resolved.
