FG Hands Over 20 Housing Units to Benue Flood Victims

The Federal Government, through the National Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (N-HYPPADEC), has handed over 20 resettlement housing units to families displaced by recurring floods in Benue State. The initiative is aimed at restoring hope and providing permanent shelter for victims who lost their homes to flooding in affected communities.

Speaking during the inauguration of the project in Mbagen, Buruku Local Government Area, the Managing Director of N-HYPPADEC, Sadiq Yelwa, said the resettlement scheme reflects the Federal Government's commitment to improving the lives of communities affected by hydroelectric power generation and environmental disasters. He noted that the project is designed to restore dignity to displaced families while addressing their long-term housing needs.

Yelwa explained that a total of 63 housing units were approved for beneficiary communities across Benue State, with the first phase comprising 20 completed homes now ready for occupation. The completed units include 10 houses in Buruku Local Government Area and another 10 in Guma Local Government Area, both of which have experienced repeated flooding in recent years.

He added that N-HYPPADEC's intervention extends beyond housing to include healthcare, education, agriculture, water supply, environmental protection, renewable energy and empowerment programmes aimed at improving the socio-economic conditions of hydropower-producing communities. The commission reaffirmed its commitment to supporting vulnerable populations through sustainable development initiatives.

The housing project is expected to improve the living conditions of displaced families while strengthening ongoing efforts to provide durable solutions for victims of flooding and other environmental disasters in Benue State.
