FG Boosts CNG Usage With 1,100-Vehicle Capacity Station in Abuja
Federal Government commissioned a high-capacity CNG station in Abuja to boost cleaner energy adoption, supporting over 1,000 vehicles daily as part of efforts to expand Nigeria’s gas infrastructure and transport reform.
The Federal Government has intensified efforts to promote Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) adoption with the commissioning of a high-capacity station in Abuja designed to serve over 1,000 vehicles daily.
The facility, located in Jahi, Abuja, was developed by Rolling Energy Limited in partnership with the Midstream and Downstream Gas Infrastructure Fund (MDGIF). It forms part of ongoing initiatives aimed at reducing dependence on petrol and diesel while expanding cleaner energy alternatives.
Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, said the project marks a major milestone in the Federal Government’s push to deepen gas utilisation under the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (Pi-CNG).
The station, known as a High Capacity CNG Daughter Booster Station, has the ability to dispense 1,000 standard cubic metres per hour and includes storage capacity of 17,000 SCM. It also features a conversion centre capable of converting up to 20 vehicles and 25 tricycles daily to CNG.
Ekpo explained that the project is part of a broader national strategy to expand gas infrastructure under the “Decade of Gas” policy, which aims to leverage Nigeria’s estimated 215 trillion cubic feet of gas reserves for industrial growth, energy security, and transport reform.
He added that similar CNG infrastructure projects are also being commissioned in Lagos and Owerri, reflecting growing private sector participation in Nigeria’s energy transition.
