FG Assures Nigerians of No Planned Electricity Tariff Hike

The Federal Government has dismissed reports suggesting that electricity tariffs will be increased, assuring Nigerians that there are no plans to raise tariffs for any category of grid electricity consumers. The clarification was made by the Special Adviser to the President on Power Infrastructure in the Office of the Vice President, Sadiq Wanka, who said recent media reports had misrepresented comments he made during a public presentation.

Wanka explained that his remarks at the Asharami Square 3.0 event in Lagos focused on investment opportunities in the power sector and the government's long-term reform agenda. He stressed that while the National Integrated Electricity Policy envisions a gradual transition to cost-reflective tariffs, there is currently no planned tariff increase for consumers in any service band.

He further stated that the government remains committed to protecting vulnerable households through continued tariff support. According to him, subsidies for consumers outside Band A will remain in place, while the government explores more efficient ways to provide support and improve electricity services without imposing additional financial burdens on Nigerians.

The Presidency urged the public to disregard reports of an imminent tariff hike, reaffirming its commitment to power sector reforms aimed at attracting investment, improving electricity supply and ensuring affordable access to power for households and businesses.
