The immediate past Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, has officially resumed duty as Nigeria's Ambassador to Qatar.

Yakubu, who served as the Chairman of the electoral commission for two terms, has now taken up the diplomatic posting, marking a new chapter in his career following his exit from INEC.

His resumption as Nigeria's envoy to the State of Qatar signals the beginning of a fresh assignment in the diplomatic service, where he is expected to represent the country's interests and strengthen bilateral relations between Nigeria and Qatar.

The appointment of the former INEC boss as ambassador is part of the diplomatic appointments made to fill key foreign missions and enhance Nigeria's representation and engagement on the international stage.

In his new role, Yakubu is expected to deepen the diplomatic, economic, and bilateral ties between Nigeria and Qatar, while promoting and protecting the interests of the country and its citizens in the Gulf nation.

As Nigeria's Ambassador to Qatar, the former electoral umpire is also expected to facilitate stronger cooperation between both countries in various sectors, including trade, investment, education, and other areas of mutual benefit.

Yakubu's tenure as INEC Chairman, which spanned two terms, witnessed the conduct of several elections, including general elections, governorship polls, and various off-cycle elections across the country.

His leadership of the electoral commission was marked by both commendations and criticisms, as is often the case with the management of the nation's complex and high-stakes electoral processes.

Having concluded his service at INEC, his deployment to the diplomatic service is seen as a continuation of his contribution to national service in a different capacity.

The diplomatic posting is expected to leverage his wealth of experience, administrative competence, and exposure in advancing Nigeria's foreign policy objectives in Qatar.

Nigeria and Qatar have continued to maintain cordial bilateral relations over the years, with both countries cooperating in various areas of mutual interest.

The resumption of Yakubu as Nigeria's envoy to Qatar is expected to further strengthen the existing ties and open up new avenues for cooperation between the two nations.

As he settles into his new role, expectations are high that he will effectively represent Nigeria's interests and contribute to deepening the relationship between Nigeria and Qatar.
