EU Welcomes US-Iran Peace Deal, Backs Reopening of Strait of Hormuz
European Council President Antonio Costa has welcomed the reported US-Iran agreement to end the Middle East conflict, expressing support for reopening the Strait of Hormuz and pursuing lasting peace.
The President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, has welcomed the reported agreement between the United States and Iran aimed at ending the ongoing Middle East conflict and restoring navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
Costa expressed the European Union’s support for the development in a message posted on X on Monday, describing the agreement as a significant step toward reducing tensions in the region.
“I look forward to an end to this costly war and to the full restoration of freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz,” Costa wrote.
He also indicated that the European Union stands ready to contribute to efforts aimed at achieving a durable and comprehensive peace settlement.
The agreement, announced by officials from the United States and Iran, is expected to bring an end to hostilities across multiple fronts, including Lebanon, while facilitating the reopening of the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
The waterway serves as one of the world’s most critical energy routes, carrying a substantial share of global oil exports. Disruptions in the strait during the conflict triggered volatility in international energy markets and raised concerns over global supply chains.
According to statements from Washington and Islamabad, the agreement is expected to be formally signed in Switzerland on Friday.
US President Donald Trump described the development as a major diplomatic breakthrough.
“The Deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now complete,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform on Sunday.
He further announced that the Strait of Hormuz would be reopened following the signing ceremony and indicated that restrictions associated with the US naval blockade would be lifted.
“Ships of the World, start your engines. Let the oil flow!” Trump declared.
Despite the optimism surrounding the announcement, few details of the agreement have been made public. Observers note that one of the most sensitive issues remains Iran’s nuclear programme, which has been a major point of contention between Tehran and Western powers for years.
The European Union has consistently advocated diplomatic engagement as the preferred path to resolving disputes over Iran’s nuclear activities and broader regional security concerns.
Analysts believe the success of the agreement will depend largely on implementation and the willingness of all parties to honour their commitments in the coming weeks.
