Enugu NDC Primary Rocked by Allegations of Manipulation as Aspirants Protest

Several aspirants in the Enugu State chapter of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) have raised concerns over alleged irregularities and manipulation during the party’s primary elections conducted by the faction led by Ibuchukwu Obetta.

Reports indicate that many aspirants and party members waited for hours at designated voting venues without the arrival of electoral officials, prompting complaints and widespread reactions on social media. Videos showing supporters stranded at various locations have circulated online, while some aspirants reportedly declared themselves winners despite the absence of official results.

One of the aggrieved aspirants, Obeta Davidwilliams, announced his withdrawal from the process, alleging widespread malpractice and manipulation within the party.

Similarly, Mathias Ezeaku, who is contesting for the Igbo-Etiti/Uzo-Uwani Federal Constituency ticket, claimed he won the primary but alleged that a party official absconded with the result sheet before the outcome could be formally recorded. His supporters responded with protest chants demanding recognition of his victory.

The exercise has also been overshadowed by allegations that former Enugu State governor Okwesilieze Nwodo influenced the process by submitting a list of preferred candidates for various positions. Names reportedly linked to the alleged list include Chinyeaka Oha for governor, Princes Ada Ogbu for Enugu East Senate, Bishop Oscar Osai for Enugu North Senate, and O. A. U. Onyema for Enugu East, among others.

The circulating list has sparked further controversy, with claims that some aspirants were sidelined in favour of individuals allegedly backed by influential party figures. However, no official confirmation has been provided regarding the authenticity of the document.

As of the time of reporting, the Obetta-led faction of the NDC had not announced official winners from the Enugu primary election.
