The Democratic Republic of the Congo is facing a worsening Ebola outbreak, with confirmed infections rising to 3,200 and deaths reaching 1,405. The figures were released by health authorities on Sunday and show how quickly the situation has escalated in just days.

According to the latest reports, the caseload jumped by about 1,000 infections in only 10 days, underscoring the speed of transmission. The outbreak, which was declared on May 15, is the country’s 17th Ebola outbreak and is being driven by the Bundibugyo strain of the virus.

The epicentre remains Ituri province in the northeast, which accounts for nearly 90% of confirmed cases. But the virus has now spread to five provinces, showing that containment remains difficult despite ongoing surveillance and treatment efforts.

Health authorities say response teams are continuing case management, contact tracing and diagnosis, while many patients remain in isolation. The latest data also show hundreds of recoveries, but the high death toll indicates that the outbreak is still causing severe strain on local health systems.

The strain of Ebola involved adds another challenge. The Bundibugyo variant does not currently have an approved vaccine or treatment, which limits the tools available to health workers and makes early detection and isolation even more important.

The outbreak also has regional implications. Because the affected provinces border neighbouring countries and the virus has already crossed into Uganda-linked transmission chains, public health authorities across the region are being forced to remain on alert.

The situation highlights how quickly a virus can overwhelm weak or remote health systems when transmission is sustained. Even where emergency response measures are in place, the combination of geography, mobility and limited treatment options can make containment extremely difficult.

For now, the key message from the reports is urgency. The outbreak is still expanding, the death toll is rising, and health officials are racing to stop further spread before it moves into more communities.
