Delta LG Anniversary: Citizens Demand Greater Transparency, Accountability

Residents across Delta State have called for greater transparency, accountability and improved service delivery as local government councils mark their second anniversary in office. The citizens acknowledged ongoing developmental efforts but urged council chairmen to provide clearer information on project execution, budget implementation and the use of public funds.

Many residents commended improvements in road construction, environmental sanitation, healthcare and education in some local government areas. However, they stressed that more needs to be done to ensure that governance remains open, inclusive and responsive to the needs of communities. They also called for stronger engagement between local government officials and residents to build public trust.

Civil society groups and community leaders urged council administrations to regularly publish details of contracts, budgets and completed projects, arguing that increased transparency would strengthen accountability and encourage greater public participation in governance. They noted that citizens have a right to know how public resources are being managed.

The anniversary has also prompted renewed calls for local governments to prioritise sustainable development, improve basic infrastructure and expand economic opportunities for residents. Stakeholders expressed hope that the remaining years of the councils' tenure would deliver more visible and measurable benefits across Delta State.
