Dangote Refinery Rejects Claims of Fuel Re-Importation Through Togo
Dangote Refinery has denied allegations that its fuel is exported to Togo and re-imported into Nigeria, describing the claims as unfounded and contrary to its business interests. The company says its focus remains on supplying the domestic market and expanding local refining capacity.
Dangote Petroleum Refinery has dismissed allegations that petroleum products refined at its facility are exported to Togo and later re-imported into Nigeria for sale, describing the claims as false and lacking factual basis.
In a statement issued by its management, the refinery insisted that there is no economic or operational justification for such an arrangement. It argued that facilitating imports that would compete directly with its own products would contradict its business objectives and market strategy.
The company maintained that its primary goal is to strengthen its position as a leading supplier of refined petroleum products within Nigeria and across the region. According to the refinery, allegations of re-importation fail to align with established commercial practices and available trade data.
The clarification follows recent reports suggesting that some petroleum products produced by the refinery were being shipped to Lomé, Togo, before finding their way back into the Nigerian market. Dangote Refinery, however, stated that the claims do not reflect the realities of its operations and should be disregarded.
The refinery further stressed its commitment to meeting local demand and supporting Nigeria’s drive towards greater energy self-sufficiency. It noted that increasing domestic refining capacity remains central to reducing dependence on imported fuel and strengthening the country's energy security.
The issue has emerged amid ongoing debates within the downstream petroleum sector over fuel imports, domestic refining, and the role of local producers in meeting national demand.
