Court Halts Impeachment Hearing Against South Africa's Ramaphosa Over $580,000 Scandal
A South African court has temporarily suspended impeachment proceedings against President Cyril Ramaphosa over the $580,000 Phala Phala cash scandal, pending a judicial review of the findings that triggered the parliamentary inquiry.
A South African court has temporarily halted impeachment proceedings against President Cyril Ramaphosa over the Phala Phala scandal involving $580,000 in cash stolen from his private game farm. The Western Cape High Court granted Ramaphosa's application to suspend the parliamentary process pending the outcome of a judicial review challenging an earlier report that found he may have committed serious constitutional violations.
The controversy stems from the 2020 theft of foreign currency concealed in a sofa at Ramaphosa's Phala Phala ranch. The President has consistently maintained that the money came from the legitimate sale of buffaloes and has denied any wrongdoing, while opposition parties have accused him of misconduct and called for his impeachment.
In granting the interim order, the court ruled that parliamentary impeachment proceedings should not continue until it determines the legality of the independent panel's findings. The ruling temporarily pauses the work of Parliament's impeachment committee but does not end the process, which could resume depending on the outcome of the judicial review.
Despite the legal battle, political analysts say Ramaphosa remains unlikely to lose office because his African National Congress (ANC) retains enough parliamentary support to block any eventual impeachment vote. The case, however, continues to draw significant public and political attention as one of the biggest controversies of his presidency.
