South Africa’s historic 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign came to a heartbreaking end on Sunday after Stephen Eustáquio scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner to hand Canada a 1-0 victory in their Round of 32 encounter at the SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.

Bafana Bafana appeared destined to force extra time after producing a disciplined defensive performance throughout the contest before conceding deep into added time.

The defeat brought an end to South Africa’s finest World Cup campaign after Hugo Broos’ side became the first Bafana Bafana team to progress beyond the group stage of the global tournament.

South Africa began the match brightly, with midfielder Teboho Mokoena testing Canadian goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau with a powerful long-range effort in the opening exchanges.

Canada gradually settled into the contest and nearly broke the deadlock when Derek Cornelius rose highest to meet a cross, but his close-range header was comfortably gathered by Ronwen Williams.

Williams continued to keep South Africa in the game before the interval, producing another fine save to deny Tanitoluwa Oluwaseyi.

Moments later, Aubrey Modiba made a crucial goal-line clearance to prevent Moïse Bombito’s header from finding the back of the net as both teams went into the break level.

The Canadians resumed the second half with greater attacking urgency, but Williams remained in outstanding form, saving another effort from Oluwaseyi before defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi blocked Jonathan David from converting the rebound.

Canada head coach Jesse Marsch introduced captain Alphonso Davies for his first appearance of the tournament with 20 minutes remaining following his recovery from injury.

The Bayern Munich defender almost made an immediate impact after creating an opportunity for Promise David, whose effort drifted narrowly wide of the target.

South Africa enjoyed a rare attacking moment through Oswin Appollis, whose long-range strike forced Crépeau into another save, but clear-cut opportunities remained scarce for Hugo Broos’ men.

With extra time seemingly inevitable, Canada found the decisive breakthrough in the opening minute of stoppage time.

A loose ball fell kindly to Stephen Eustáquio just outside the penalty area, and the midfielder calmly guided a low shot into the bottom corner beyond Williams to score Canada’s first-ever FIFA World Cup knockout-stage goal.

The late strike secured a famous victory for the co-hosts and sent them into the Round of 16, where they will face the winner of the clash between Morocco and the Netherlands on July 4.

Despite the painful defeat, South Africa leaves the tournament with pride after recording its best-ever World Cup performance by reaching the knockout stage for the first time in the country’s history.
