The governorship candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Kano State, Alhassan Kabir Muhammed Rurum, has selected Abubakar Sadiq Kwankwaso, son of former Kano State Governor and NDC vice-presidential candidate Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, as his running mate for the 2027 governorship election.

The governorship candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Kano State, Alhassan Kabir Muhammed Rurum, has named Abubakar Sadiq Kwankwaso as his running mate ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Abubakar Sadiq is the son of former Kano State Governor and the NDC's vice-presidential candidate, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

The announcement was made on Thursday during a stakeholders' meeting held at the Kwankwasiyya political headquarters in Kano.

Speaking at the event, Rurum described his running mate as a young, dynamic and highly educated politician who shares the vision and values of the Kwankwasiyya movement and the NDC.

He expressed confidence that the joint ticket would deliver victory for the NDC in Kano State, citing the popularity of the Kwankwasiyya brand and the strong political structure built by Senator Kwankwaso over the years.

Rurum, who emerged as the NDC governorship candidate through the party's primary election held on May 30, 2026, thanked the leadership of the NDC and the Kwankwasiyya movement for their support and pledged to run an inclusive campaign focused on addressing the developmental challenges facing Kano State.

Abubakar Sadiq Kwankwaso, in his acceptance remarks, thanked the governorship candidate and party stakeholders for the confidence reposed in him, pledging to work tirelessly to ensure victory for the NDC in the 2027 elections.

The younger Kwankwaso, who has been gradually making his way into active politics, is seen by political observers as part of efforts by the Kwankwasiyya political family to sustain its influence and prepare a new generation of leaders within the movement.

The selection of Abubakar Sadiq as running mate is expected to further consolidate the political structure of the NDC in Kano State, leveraging the strong grassroots appeal and political network built by his father over decades.

Political analysts say the choice signals the Kwankwasiyya movement's determination to reclaim Kano State from the ruling New Nigeria People's Party (NNPP) in 2027, setting the stage for what is expected to be a highly competitive gubernatorial contest.
