Bosnia Beat Qatar to Reach First-Ever World Cup Knockout Stages

Bosnia-Herzegovina have qualified for the knockout stages of the FIFA World Cup for the first time in their history after defeating Qatar 3-1 in their final Group B fixture on Wednesday.

The victory saw Bosnia finish the group stage with four points and, hours later, FIFA confirmed that they had secured one of the eight available places reserved for the best third-placed teams advancing to the Round of 32.

For Qatar, the defeat marked another disappointing World Cup campaign. The 2022 hosts exited at the group stage once again, although they managed to collect a point this time after finishing their home tournament without a single point four years ago.

Bosnia started brightly and dominated the opening exchanges, creating several early opportunities that forced Qatar goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada into action.

Their pressure eventually paid off through 18-year-old Kerim Alajbegovic, who became Bosnia’s youngest-ever World Cup player to score at the tournament.

The talented winger produced a stunning strike from outside the penalty area after beating two defenders, leaving Abunada with no chance and sending the Bosnian supporters into celebration.

Bosnia doubled their advantage shortly afterwards when veteran striker Edin Dzeko played a key role in a move that resulted in an unfortunate own goal by Abunada.

Dzeko, making his 150th appearance for the national team, nearly added a third goal before halftime but saw his effort rebound off the post.

Qatar responded before the break through their most capped player, Hassan Al-Haydos, who calmly reduced the deficit in the 42nd minute and gave the hosts hope heading into the second half.

However, Bosnia regained control after the restart and continued to create the better chances despite the intense conditions.

Qatar suffered a major setback when Al-Haydos was forced off injured in the 55th minute, bringing an emotional end to his World Cup campaign.

Bosnia eventually secured qualification when Ermin Mahmic scored in the 80th minute, converting from close range to make it 3-1 and seal a memorable victory.

The result sparked celebrations among the Bosnian players and supporters as the nation achieved a historic milestone by reaching the World Cup knockout rounds for the first time.

Bosnia will now turn their attention to the Round of 32, where they hope to continue their impressive run at the tournament.
