Balogun Scores Twice as US Thrash Paraguay 4-1 in World Cup Opener
Folarin Balogun scored twice as the United States crushed Paraguay 4-1 in their World Cup opener, delivering an impressive display that delighted home fans in Los Angeles.
The United States made a stunning start to their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign on Friday, defeating Paraguay 4-1 in a dominant Group D encounter at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.
Inspired by a brilliant performance from Folarin Balogun, who scored twice, the co-hosts produced an attacking masterclass that erased concerns surrounding their form heading into the tournament.
The Americans had arrived at the World Cup under pressure following a string of disappointing results in pre-tournament friendlies. However, any doubts about their readiness quickly disappeared as they overwhelmed Paraguay from the opening whistle.
The breakthrough came after only seven minutes when relentless United States pressure forced Paraguayan defender Damian Bobadilla into conceding an own goal.
The early strike energized the home crowd and set the tone for a one-sided first half.
Balogun, who previously represented England at youth level before switching allegiance to the United States, extended the advantage with two clinical finishes. His goals helped the hosts race into a commanding 3-0 lead before halftime, leaving Paraguay with a mountain to climb.
United States captain Christian Pulisic praised the team’s intensity and focus after the match.
“Just a great start from the guys,” Pulisic said. “The guys came out with so much energy, just a great performance and a deserved win.”
The festive atmosphere began long before kickoff, with Katy Perry delivering a pre-match performance. Celebrities including Tom Cruise, Leonardo DiCaprio and Halle Berry were among the 70,492 spectators in attendance.
The United States maintained control throughout the second half and capped their impressive display when substitute Gio Reyna added a fourth goal late in the game.
Paraguay managed a consolation goal through Brazil-born forward Mauricio in the 73rd minute after a rare defensive lapse by the hosts.
The convincing victory puts the United States in a strong position in Group D ahead of upcoming matches against Australia and Turkey as they seek a place in the knockout stages.
