Babachir Warns Nigerians Against Voting Atiku in 2027
Former SGF Babachir Lawal has urged Nigerians not to support Atiku Abubakar in the 2027 presidential election, accusing the former vice president of practising ethnic politics. Atiku has denied the allegations, describing them as false.
Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, has urged Nigerians not to vote for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar in the 2027 presidential election, accusing him of practising ethnic politics. Lawal made the remarks during a telephone interview while reacting to the controversy surrounding the African Democratic Congress (ADC) governorship ticket in Adamawa State.
Lawal alleged that Atiku was behind efforts to replace the ADC's governorship candidate in Adamawa, Suleiman Omar, with Tukur Modibbo, despite Omar's emergence through the party's primary election. He claimed the move reflected what he described as Atiku's ethnic-based political approach and warned Nigerians against supporting his presidential ambition.
Responding to the allegations, Atiku Abubakar dismissed Lawal's claims as false and baseless, denying any involvement in attempts to replace the party's governorship candidate. The exchange highlights growing tensions within the ADC-led opposition coalition as political manoeuvring ahead of the 2027 general election intensifies.
The disagreement comes amid increasing political realignments and coalition-building efforts ahead of the next presidential election, with opposition parties seeking to strengthen their positions against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
