Atiku Appoints Kenneth Okonkwo as Spokesperson
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has appointed ADC chieftain Kenneth Okonkwo as his spokesperson, despite the actor’s recent criticism of Rotimi Amaechi’s vice-presidential selection for 2027.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has appointed Nollywood actor and chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Kenneth Okonkwo, as his official spokesperson ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The appointment comes shortly after Okonkwo publicly criticised the selection of former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi as the ADC’s vice-presidential candidate for the 2027 election, raising concerns over the party’s decision.
Okonkwo announced his appointment in a statement posted on his official X account on Thursday, expressing gratitude to Atiku for the confidence reposed in him.
“I give God all the glory to be appointed by His Excellency Atiku Abubakar as his Spokesperson. I thank HE AA for the immense confidence reposed in me,” he wrote.
According to him, the appointment reflects Atiku’s commitment to democratic principles and willingness to embrace differing opinions within the party.
“This appointment speaks volume of the democratic credentials of HE AA. Rather than pick offence against any of his associates for expressing genuine reservations of any action taken, HE AA always opts for dialogue and compromise that will engender solution to problems,” he stated.
Okonkwo disclosed that discussions held with Atiku and other stakeholders within the ADC addressed the interests of the South-East, assuring that concerns from the region had been considered within the constraints of the Electoral Act 2026 and prevailing political realities.
He also acknowledged the contributions of several party leaders and allies, including Dr Kashim Imam, whom he credited for promoting inclusiveness in the evolving political landscape.
The former Labour Party presidential campaign spokesperson further thanked former ADC National Chairman Ralphs Nwosu for his role in strengthening the party and preparing it for future political challenges.
He equally appreciated Dr Ekene Onwuka, Senior Special Assistant to Atiku on Special Duties, for his efforts in assembling a formidable campaign team ahead of the 2027 elections.
Okonkwo concluded by thanking his family, supporters and friends for their prayers and encouragement, while asking for continued support as he assumes his new responsibility.
“My sincere gratitude to my family, fans, and friends for their support and prayers… I still covet your prayers for wisdom, courage, provision, and protection needed to carry out this challenging post which will usher in a glorious and great Nigeria,” he said.
The appointment is expected to strengthen Atiku’s media and public communication strategy as preparations for the 2027 presidential election gather momentum.
