Argentine Footballer Loses Wife, Two Children in Venezuela Earthquake
Argentine footballer Lucas Trejo lost his wife and two children after twin earthquakes struck Venezuela. His club confirmed the tragedy after rescue workers recovered their bodies following days of searching.
Argentine footballer Lucas Trejo has suffered a devastating personal tragedy after losing his wife and two children in the powerful twin earthquakes that struck parts of Venezuela earlier this week.
Trejo, who plays for Venezuelan second-division side Club Sport Marítimo La Guaira, reportedly spent three days searching through the rubble of his collapsed apartment building before rescue workers recovered the bodies of his wife, Yanina, and their two children, Aaron and Ainhoa.
The heartbreaking development was confirmed by the club in a statement shared on its official Instagram page on Sunday.
“Club Sport Marítimo La Guaira deeply mourns the irreparable loss of our player’s wife and children,” the club said while posting a family photograph in tribute to the victims.
The 38-year-old defender was away from home attending a team training camp in Caracas when the earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude, struck on Wednesday evening.
Immediately after learning about the disaster, Trejo rushed back to his hometown of La Guaira, one of the areas worst affected by the earthquakes, only to find that his residential building had collapsed.
According to his brother-in-law, Ricardo Ardiles, the footballer returned to a scene of complete destruction.
“He found absolutely nothing of what the building itself had been,” Ardiles told CNN, describing the emotional moment Trejo arrived at the disaster site.
Trejo reportedly joined emergency responders and volunteers in the desperate search for his family, holding onto hope that they might still be alive beneath the debris.
After three days of rescue efforts, emergency workers eventually recovered the bodies of his wife and children, bringing a tragic end to the search.
In a separate message, Club Sport Marítimo La Guaira expressed solidarity with the player, assuring him that he would not face the difficult period alone.
The club extended its condolences to Trejo and pledged unwavering support as he mourns the unimaginable loss of his family.
The tragedy has sparked an outpouring of sympathy from football fans, teammates, clubs and members of the wider sporting community, many of whom have offered prayers and messages of encouragement to the veteran defender.
The twin earthquakes caused widespread devastation across several parts of Venezuela, leaving numerous casualties, damaged infrastructure and thousands of residents displaced as rescue and relief operations continue.
