APC Faces Internal Revolt After Primaries as Lagos Power Struggles Deepen
APC is facing internal tensions after its National Assembly primaries, with disputes over candidate selection and Lagos power struggles triggering protests, grievances, and concerns about party unity ahead of 2027.
Fresh tensions have emerged within the All Progressives Congress (APC) following the conclusion of its National Assembly primaries, with disagreements over candidate selection triggering unrest in several states and exposing deeper cracks within the ruling party ahead of the 2027 elections.
The fallout has been particularly noticeable in Lagos, where ongoing power struggles among influential political blocs have continued to shape the outcome of party contests. Recent primaries led to the loss of return tickets by several serving lawmakers, reflecting a significant shift in the state’s political structure.
Across the country, dozens of federal lawmakers failed to secure party nominations, while some aspirants and supporters raised concerns over alleged imposition of candidates, irregularities, and lack of transparency in parts of the process.
In Lagos, reports of disputes, protests, and isolated incidents of violence during some primary exercises further highlighted internal divisions within the party. Security agencies were forced to intervene in certain areas following clashes among rival supporters. The developments have heightened concerns among party stakeholders, with fears that unresolved grievances could lead to defections or weaken party unity as preparations for the next general election gather momentum.
Although party leaders have called on members to accept outcomes peacefully and utilise internal dispute-resolution mechanisms, signs of dissatisfaction remain visible in several state chapters where aggrieved aspirants continue to challenge results.
Political observers believe the post-primary fallout could become a major test of the APC’s ability to maintain cohesion, particularly in key states where factional rivalries and succession battles remain unresolved.
