Anglican Bishop Decries Hardship, Urges Action on Economy, Insecurity

The Anglican Bishop of the Diocese of Owo, Rt. Rev. Stephen Fagbemi, has expressed concern over the worsening economic hardship and insecurity in Nigeria, urging the Federal Government to take urgent and decisive steps to improve the welfare of citizens. He said millions of Nigerians are struggling under the weight of rising poverty, inflation and persistent security challenges, warning that the situation is pushing many families to the brink.

Delivering his presidential address at the second session of the seventh synod of the Diocese of Owo in Ondo State, Fagbemi lamented the high cost of living and declining purchasing power, noting that many households can barely afford basic necessities. He called on government at all levels to implement policies capable of easing the economic burden on citizens and restoring public confidence.

The bishop also condemned the persistent insecurity across different parts of the country, describing kidnapping, banditry and violent attacks as major threats to national development. He urged security agencies to intensify efforts to protect lives and property while calling on political leaders to demonstrate greater commitment to addressing the root causes of insecurity.

Fagbemi stressed that Nigeria possesses the resources and human capacity to overcome its current challenges if leaders embrace transparency, accountability and people-centred governance. He appealed to Nigerians to remain united, law-abiding and hopeful, despite the country's present difficulties, expressing confidence that better days lie ahead through collective effort and responsible leadership.

He further urged the Church to continue praying for the nation while supporting initiatives that promote peace, justice and national development. According to the bishop, sustained collaboration between government, religious institutions and citizens is essential to rebuilding the economy and restoring security across the country.
