Anambra Teachers Reject FG Plan To Scrap UTME For Education Courses
Teachers in Anambra State have opposed the Federal Government’s proposal to remove UTME requirements for education-related courses, warning that the move could lower academic standards and weaken the quality of future teachers in Nigeria.
Teachers in Anambra State have rejected the Federal Government’s proposal to remove the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) requirement for candidates seeking admission into education-related courses in tertiary institutions.
The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Anambra chapter, described the policy as one that could weaken academic standards in Colleges of Education and reduce the quality of future teachers.
According to the union, admission into education programmes should remain competitive, arguing that lowering entry requirements could negatively affect the competence of graduates produced by the system.
The teachers also urged the government to focus on improving working conditions, teacher welfare, and infrastructure in schools rather than adjusting admission standards to attract more applicants.
They maintained that strengthening the education sector requires broader reforms that make teaching more attractive as a profession, rather than relaxing academic requirements.
The union called for wider consultation with stakeholders before implementing policies that affect teacher training and education quality nationwide.
