Amad Fires Ivory Coast to First African Win of 2026 World Cup
Amad Diallo scored a 90th-minute winner as Ivory Coast defeated Ecuador 1–0 in their World Cup opener, securing the first African victory of the 2026 tournament in dramatic fashion.
Manchester United winger Amad Diallo produced a moment of brilliance in the dying seconds of the match to fire Ivory Coast to a 1–0 victory over Ecuador in their opening Group E fixture at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The dramatic late strike at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia not only secured all three points for the Elephants but also marked the first win recorded by an African nation at the tournament.
The match began at a high tempo, with Ivory Coast creating early chances through Bazoumana Touré, who forced a sharp save from Ecuador goalkeeper Hernán Galíndez. Ecuador responded strongly, hitting the woodwork twice in quick succession through John Yeboah and Alan Minda after defensive lapses from the Ivorian backline.
Ivory Coast also came close before halftime when Elye Wahi rattled the crossbar following an impressive attacking move involving Yan Diomande, underlining how evenly contested the encounter remained.
After the restart, Ecuador continued to threaten, with Gonzalo Plata forcing a strong save from goalkeeper Yahia Fofana as both sides pushed for a breakthrough in front of a vibrant crowd.
As the game appeared to be heading toward a goalless draw, Ivory Coast found the decisive moment in the 90th minute. Wilfried Singo drove forward from deep and surged into the Ecuadorian box before delivering a well-timed cut-back.
Diallo, introduced in the second half, showed composure beyond his years as he opened his body and calmly guided a first-time left-footed finish into the far corner, leaving Galíndez with no chance.
The goal sealed a famous win for Ivory Coast, ended Ecuador’s 19-match unbeaten run, and gave the African side an early advantage in Group E as they continue their World Cup campaign.
