Alonso Opposes FIFA Plan to Bring Private Investors Into World Cup

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has joined growing opposition to FIFA's proposal to allow private investors to acquire a stake in the commercial operations of the FIFA World Cup, insisting that football must remain "for the people" rather than private interests. His comments come amid increasing resistance from major football bodies over the governing body's investment plan.

Speaking during Chelsea's pre-season tour in Sydney, Alonso backed UEFA's strong stance against the proposal, arguing that football's global appeal is rooted in its authenticity and accessibility. The former Spain international said the sport should remain in the hands of the wider football community, expressing hope that the plan would not go ahead.

The proposal would see FIFA establish a commercial subsidiary to manage its flagship competitions, including the World Cup, and sell a minority stake to private investors. FIFA says the initiative could generate up to $4.2 billion for football development, but critics fear it would place commercial interests above the long-term integrity of the game.

Alonso's remarks add to mounting opposition from UEFA, CONCACAF and the Asian Football Confederation, all of which have criticised the proposal for what they describe as inadequate consultation and governance. UEFA has even warned that it is prepared to boycott FIFA competitions if the plan proceeds without meaningful engagement with stakeholders.

Despite the backlash, FIFA has indicated that it will continue consultations with its 211 member associations before any final decision is taken. The organisation maintains that no decision has been made and insists the process will remain transparent and democratic.
