The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arraigned a social media influencer before a court over allegations of raising a false security alarm capable of inciting public panic and disrupting public peace.

The influencer was reportedly arrested and charged following allegations of spreading false and unverified security information on social media, an act the police described as capable of causing fear, panic, and breakdown of law and order in the state.

The Command, which confirmed the arraignment, warned members of the public, particularly social media users, against the dissemination of false, misleading, and unverified information that could threaten public peace and security.

According to the police, the suspect allegedly published a security report on social media that turned out to be false, triggering unnecessary fear and anxiety among residents before security operatives intervened to debunk the claim.

Police authorities stressed that the spread of fake news and false security alarms remains a serious offence under the law, warning that anyone found culpable would be made to face the full consequences of their actions.

"We will not fold our arms and watch some individuals use social media to spread falsehood and cause panic in the society. Disseminating false security information is a crime, and offenders will be brought to justice," a police spokesperson stated.

The Command urged residents to always verify information before sharing it on social media platforms, noting that the reckless spread of unverified content could have grave consequences for public safety and order.

It further called on members of the public to channel genuine security concerns through appropriate channels, including established police emergency lines, rather than resorting to spreading unverified claims on social media.

The arraignment of the influencer is part of broader efforts by the police to curb the menace of fake news and misinformation, which authorities say has continued to pose a significant threat to peace and security across the country.

The development has continued to generate reactions among residents and social media users, with many calling for responsible use of social media platforms, while others raised concerns about the need to balance enforcement with the protection of citizens' rights to free expression.

Police authorities reiterated their commitment to maintaining law and order, protecting lives and property, and ensuring a peaceful environment for all residents of the state.

The Command assured the public that it would continue to monitor activities on social media and take appropriate action against anyone found spreading false information capable of endangering public safety.

The case is expected to proceed in court as legal proceedings continue.
