Akpabio Rebukes Ndubueze, Oshiomhole Over Senate Rule Breach
Senate President Godswill Akpabio rebuked Senators Adams Oshiomhole and Patrick Ndubueze during plenary for violating Senate procedures, urging them to obey the chamber's rules and set good examples while deliberating on a motion.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio on Friday cautioned Senators Adams Oshiomhole and Patrick Ndubueze for breaching the Senate's Standing Orders during plenary, insisting that lawmakers must strictly follow parliamentary procedures and set good examples. The exchange occurred while senators were considering a motion on strengthening compliance with Senate invitations by heads of government agencies.
The disagreement began when Oshiomhole attempted to introduce an additional prayer to the motion while making further arguments. Akpabio immediately interrupted him, explaining that Senate rules do not permit fresh debate once members move additional prayers. He stressed that lawmakers must adhere to established procedures to ensure order during legislative proceedings.
Moments later, Patrick Ndubueze rose to second the motion but also began making additional remarks. Akpabio stopped him, reminding the senator that his role was only to second the motion. Addressing Ndubueze, the Senate President said, "You've been here for three years and you still don't read the rules," urging him to set a proper example for other lawmakers.
After clarifying that Ndubueze had formally seconded the motion, Akpabio proceeded to a voice vote, bringing the matter to a close. The exchange came amid broader discussions on the Senate's constitutional powers to compel ministries, departments and agencies to honour invitations issued by legislative committees.
