Aisha Yesufu Alleges Manipulation in NDC Senate Primary
Aisha Yesufu has alleged manipulation in her party’s senatorial primaries, claiming the process was decided behind closed doors rather than through a transparent delegate vote, which she says led to her withdrawal and renewed debate on internal party democracy.
Human rights activist and former Federal Capital Territory (FCT) senatorial aspirant under the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Aisha Yesufu, has alleged that the party’s senatorial primary process was manipulated and not truly reflective of delegates’ wishes.
Yesufu claimed that what was presented as a primary election was effectively decided in a closed-room arrangement, rather than through a transparent vote involving accredited delegates.
She further alleged that the outcome of the exercise did not reflect the will of party members, insisting that the process was “subverted” and lacked fairness and openness expected in an internal party election.
The activist, who had been in the race for the FCT senatorial ticket, also expressed disappointment over how the party handled its selection process, suggesting that internal decisions had already been made before delegates were properly engaged.
Reports indicate that the controversy led to her stepping away from the senatorial contest after tensions around the conduct of the primaries intensified.
The development has sparked wider discussion around internal democracy within political parties, with observers noting that disputes over candidate selection remain a recurring issue in Nigeria’s electoral process.
