ADC Alleges Intimidation of Opposition Parties in Rivers

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Rivers State has accused authorities of intimidating opposition parties, raising concerns over what it described as increasing restrictions on lawful political activities in the state. The party said the latest developments threaten democratic participation ahead of future political engagements.

According to the party, the ban on all forms of gathering in Ikwerre Local Government Area has heightened fears among opposition groups. The ADC argued that the directive did not occur in isolation, claiming its members in the area have repeatedly faced threats, intimidation and disruption whenever they attempt to hold legitimate political meetings.

The party maintained that the situation creates the impression that political activities are being deliberately restricted under the guise of maintaining security. It called on relevant authorities to ensure that all political parties are allowed to operate freely in line with constitutional provisions guaranteeing freedom of association and political participation.

ADC further urged security agencies and the Rivers State Government to remain impartial and protect the rights of all political actors, regardless of party affiliation. It warned that any attempt to suppress opposition voices could undermine public confidence in the democratic process and increase political tension in the state.

The allegations come amid growing political activities across the country ahead of the 2027 general elections, with opposition parties calling for an environment that allows peaceful campaigns and equal opportunities for political engagement.
