AAC Picks Sowore as Consensus Presidential Candidate for 2027
The AAC adopted Omoyele Sowore as its consensus presidential candidate for 2027, as the activist rejected coalition politics, criticised the APC government and promised revolutionary political change in Nigeria.
The African Action Congress has officially adopted human rights activist and Sahara Reporters publisher Omoyele Sowore as its consensus presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.
The announcement was made during the party’s presidential primary, where delegates and members unanimously endorsed Sowore to represent the AAC in the next presidential contest. The development positions the former presidential candidate once again at the centre of Nigeria’s opposition politics ahead of the 2027 elections.
Chairman of the AAC Primary Election Committee, Kayode Babayemi, formally declared Sowore as the party’s candidate, describing the decision as a reflection of the confidence party members have in his leadership and commitment to democratic ideals.
“I declare Omoyele Sowore as the consensus presidential candidate of the African Action Congress,” Babayemi said during the exercise.
“This decision reflects the confidence of the party in his consistency in leadership and long-term commitment to the struggle for justice, freedom and a truly democratic Nigeria.”
Babayemi also commended party members, stakeholders and supporters for remaining committed to the AAC’s principles despite political pressures and challenges facing opposition parties in the country.
In his acceptance speech, Sowore described the AAC as Nigeria’s only genuine opposition platform, insisting that the party had remained independent from political godfatherism, corruption and elite influence.
According to him, the AAC was founded on the collective efforts of ordinary Nigerians seeking fundamental political and social change.
“While some claimed there was no alternative to dictatorship, we declared RevolutionNow in 2019,” Sowore said.
He also dismissed growing calls for opposition coalitions ahead of the 2027 elections, maintaining that the AAC itself already represents a coalition for revolutionary change.
“One of the biggest questions asked of us is whether we are forming a coalition. We told them: we are the coalition,” he stated.
Sowore further criticised the ruling All Progressives Congress, blaming it for worsening insecurity, economic hardship and governance failures across the country.
He additionally urged institutions such as the International Monetary Fund to stop granting loans to Nigerian politicians, warning that his administration would reject responsibility for such debts if elected into office in 2027.
