The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has arrested a 63-year-old Chinese woman for allegedly attempting to smuggle 31 kilograms of “Canadian Loud,” a synthetic strain of cannabis, into Nigeria through the Lagos airport.

The suspect, identified as Ting Kiong, who is reported to have naturalised in Malaysia, was intercepted on Sunday, May 17, 2026, at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, upon arrival from Thailand via Dubai on an Emirates flight.

According to the NDLEA spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, operatives attached to Terminal 2 Arrival Hall discovered the illicit substance hidden inside two large travel bags.

She was said to have been found with two boxes containing 31 kilograms of the psychoactive substance during routine checks at the airport.

During interrogation, the suspect reportedly claimed she worked as a carer in Malaysia and said her daughter sponsored her trip from Malaysia to Thailand before she was handed the consignment.

She further stated that she spent about two weeks in Thailand before receiving the drugs at an airport for delivery to Nigeria.

In a separate operation, the NDLEA also intercepted a large shipment of pharmaceutical opioids at the Lagos airport import shed.

The agency said 29 cartons containing over 1.8 million tablets of Tapentadol, valued at more than N2.1 billion, were handed over by the Nigeria Customs Service after close monitoring.

At the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu, operatives arrested another suspect who excreted 185.36 grams of cocaine while under surveillance, according to the agency.

In Abuja, a 29-year-old building engineer was arrested while attempting to board a flight to Italy, after officers recovered thousands of pills of tramadol and tapentadol concealed in his luggage.

The NDLEA also reported multiple seizures across courier services, including MDMA (ecstasy) headed to the Netherlands, tramadol concealed in personal items bound for the United States and United Kingdom, and other intercepted narcotics.

In Edo State, operatives recovered 489 kilograms of skunk and cannabis seeds, while additional arrests were made in Kano and Lagos border communities, including seizures along the Seme border.

In Ekiti State, another warehouse raid led to the recovery of over 1,100 kilograms of skunk, with a suspect arrested in connection with the operation.

Chairman of the NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (Rtd), praised operatives for sustained nationwide anti-drug operations and reiterated the agency’s commitment to curbing drug trafficking and abuse.
